Anthea’s is among the Great Taste Award winners of 2017
Great Taste, the world’s most coveted food awards, which celebrates the very best in food and drink, has announced the Great Taste stars of 2017. Out of over 12,300 products to be judged, Anthea’s, our family business located on the beautiful Greek island of Kea, was awarded a 2-star Great Taste Award, which means judges dubbed it outstanding, for our Raw Thyme Honey, and a 1-star Great Taste Award, which means judges dubbed it simply delicious, for our Handmade Honey Almond Sesame Bar (Pasteli).
Some of the Judges’ comments included the following remarks:
For Anthea’s Raw Thyme Honey: (see how we harvest our honey here: https://www.antheas.gr/en/harvesting-our-thyme-honey )
“A rich golden syrup colour. Wonderful floral notes from the thyme blossom. Clear, clean and packs a real punch.”
“A good pale gold with fine clarity. We really enjoyed the mouthfeel – the honey coated the mouth and felt silky with some substance.”
“Clear with an enticing aroma. Very good. A fragrant and extremely moreish flavour. Exceptionally well balanced. Stunning, well done.”
For Anthea’s Handmade Honey Almond Sesame Bar:
“An attractive glossy look, and an inviting aroma. The honey used here is great, with layers of flavour. The sesame is tender and full of flavour – one judge said 'that is how to make sesame seeds, so good for you, delectable'. The level of orange is just right, lifting the deep honey and nut notes.”
“An impressive generous pasteli with a glossy finish. The texture was thick and syrupy with all the flavours coming through well.”
“Full of sesame, with little pieces of candied orange peel. A lovely crunch of the toasted sesame. In the mouth, the sesame melts into a flock and fills the mouth.”
Judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers, as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. As well as a badge of honour, the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blind-tasting by hundreds of judges.
“We are truly thrilled by this wonderful recognition of our products and family efforts! We are well aware that the Great Taste Awards are all about taste and this is the main reason why we participated in this highly-respected evaluation of quality and taste! All of our products are naturally grown and treated with great care and respect towards our island’s rich ecosystem and nature’s seasons. Our beloved raw thyme honey is collected straight from the extractor, it is totally unheated, unpasterised and unprocessed, whereas our handmade sesame bars are made based on an old family recipe!” said Kalliope Georganti, Owner and Co-Founder of Anthea’s.
Recognised as a stamp of excellence among consumers and retailers alike, Great Taste values taste above all else, with no regard for branding and packaging. All products are removed from their wrapper, jar, box or bottle before being tasted. The judges then savour, confer and re-taste to decide which products are worthy of a 1-, 2- or 3-star award. There were 12,366 Great Taste entries this year and of those products, 165 have been awarded a 3-star, 1,011 received a 2-star and 3,171 were awarded a 1-star accolade. The panel of judges included; chef, food writer and author, Gill Meller, MasterChef judge and restaurant critic, Charles Campion, author and chef, Zoe Adjonyoh, baker, Tom Herbert, and food writer and baking columnist Martha Collison as well as food buyers from Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges, and Harvey Nichols.
